The future of AI is so bright that it can no longer be ignored!
The potential of the technology is tremendous and it will be a major part of our lives in 2018. We cannot think of how powerful it is, that we’ve only just scratched the surface. And there are still so many opportunities to take advantage of. In this post, I’m going to cover what we need to know about artificial intelligence technology and some of its benefits and limitations. Also, in the next post, I’ll talk about more applications where it can be used rather than being limited to video-based and voice recognition. For those who want to learn more about it, here’s a fantastic infographic by Andrew Ng showing up to help, along with a list that’s perfect for your own reading. It features everything from robotics to self-driving cars to driverless vehicles and even things like virtual assistants like Siri and Google Assistant. Everything is amazing and gives you an idea of the possibilities that you just may not have thought of, without having to do any research yourself. You should probably head over to this article to find out all about how artificial intelligence has become such a huge part of daily life for us, which makes me very excited, as soon as my readership starts growing I predict that these articles will continue to grow exponentially!
So now you know what artificial intelligence(AI) is all
about, let’s go into details, to build a bigger picture. When we talk about
artificial intelligence, we usually think about intelligent agents in movies
and television shows, but that’s not always the case, we often don’t want to
put ourselves in their shoes, even though we have seen some excellent examples
of these robots in the films, one of them was Sophia Robot from Netflix series
called Her. One thing to note here though is while playing around with Alexa
and Siri, we only see what they’re doing, but do not quite see the thinking
and intelligence behind their actions. That’s because one of main reason that
artificial intelligence is such a complex and hard topic to figure out is that
it has more to do with psychology such as why a person would decide to give a
certain task to a robot rather than real humans. So let me try to explain with
an example, if a human gave a task in front of their house to a machine
instead, what would the outcome be? Maybe the same person would just pick one
of the available home automation devices instead of putting themselves in that
situation again. This is when AI is at the core of automation.
We’re getting closer and closer to achieving artificial
general intelligence(AGI) which can do anything a human can do, which means for
example that we can create machines that could drive electric cars, but can
look after multiple homes as well, and is able to identify people. Let’s also
imagine ourselves living on a planet of AI and the machines will think
independently and act responsibly until AGI arrives at our doorstep, as opposed
to today‘s centralized approach which seems more like to push humanity into oblivion.
But let’s not forget that artificial intelligence is not a threat to society
which is probably why society loves it so much, because in the end, everyone
would prefer to live with a safe set of hands than one that has no reasoning
capabilities.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, artificial
intelligence is already here today and it’s changing everyday. How will we use
it? Will artificial intelligence replace jobs? Does it replace creativity? As
technology becomes mainstream, what kind of job we have available to us so that
we can focus on more important things? Do we need higher education or training
to function? Will we get replaced by robots, maybe…
I think the answer to all these questions is yes and no…
So that is the key point in terms of whether or not you like what you do, if
you think that your job description will change then you are right. Now you can
either learn new skills which will help increase your productivity if you
believe so, but if you think that jobs will be lost altogether, then you are
absolutely wrong. There are plenty of occupations where the skills to perform
tasks will remain intact even with increased use of automated technologies.
Some examples can be doctors, teachers, accountants, and even engineers.
Automation is only adding efficiency, so it doesn’t necessarily have to
eliminate jobs, but that’s exactly what we are making happen. What jobs do we
have left? Well we can use artificial intelligence to create new ones.
Now let’s talk about ways to apply the power of AI in
business. From smart customer service chatbots to increasing efficiency in
manufacturing to ensuring safety and health in production, AI has been
developed over the past few years and it’s only going to expand more in 2020,
so what’s in store for us? While most people would hate to work with robots,
there are some jobs which are a bit safer. Imagine working as a medical
professional, you will probably never spend your whole day looking at someone’s
face all day, your job would essentially be to listen to people’s bodies in
order to determine whether or not they are sick or injured. Or perhaps you’d
prefer to be able to communicate efficiently with clients. I just saw something
cool last week, as a UX designer, I took two pages of user experiences that were
built by other designers and asked myself whether they’re possible with the
current design process I currently use. My answer was definitely the latter!
Why? Because now I have access to several different kinds of information to
make a decision, at least one is visual, which will ultimately save time, which
is great if you want to move forward without having to ask a lot of questions
to your client.
In conclusion, what all of us need to do is understand
what artificial intelligence is, what it can and could it do, then we can work
together to make sure that we understand each other’s needs. Because although
it might seem scary, it will eventually become the standard for our everyday
routine. Just like the Internet did a century ago, so let’s enjoy our free time,
be creative and embrace change and innovation. Here’s a little reminder from
IBM Watson, its new assistant is designed to help us understand more about how
computers think and interact with each other and how we can connect to them. It
says that, we’re all connected because each of us is the product of others.
